The internal and external obliques run from the ribcage to the pelvis diagonally and work together to create movement of the spine increasing back strength. At our San Diego pilates studio, Mission Valley Pilates, we have lots of ways to strengthen these! In our reformer classes we combine spinal rotations seated on the box, diagonal roll downs using dumbbells, mermaid stretches on the equipment, side bends off the box, and swan dives on the floor. All of these are performed at your own strength level as we watch you grow stronger! It’s like Joseph Pilates said, after just 10 sessions you’ll feel different!
