Most of us devoted to regular #exercise experience leg cramps at one time or another. The most annoying ones come in the middle of the night after a day of heavy workouts. The widely quoted remedy is "eat a banana" for its potassium "punch". But did you know that the leading cause of muscle cramps is dehydration, and that a banana is way down the list of foods high in potassium?
Potassium is found in abundance in a huge number of common foods: peaches, lima beans, pears, potatos, spinach, peas, watermelon to name a few are ALL better sources for potassium than bananas!
So if you are a #TRX or #pilatesreformer aficionado, investigate some of these other healthy foods to prevent muscle cramps.
So what IS the difference between doing Pilates and doing strength training with dumbbells and gym equipment? One big difference is the emphasis on the spine, shoulder girdle, and pelvis in pilates, with the emphasis on limbs being secondary.
In our Pilates Reformer classes in Mission Valley, we always begin with an assessment of posture and body alignment. We work both sides of the body to even out left to right imbalances, and as we do so, we create greater strength and flexibility simultaneously.
Joseph Pilates was an insightful master of this which is why the Pilates technique has experienced longevity of over 100 years.
Suspended TRX planks are a favorite exercise in our San Diego pilates studio. There are many versions of them, all of which result in a killer workout!
Combined with flexibility training in our Pilates Reformer classes, you will see some awesome changes in your body quickly!
As with all our classes, we put you in a group which matches your fitness level and goals. Lots of classes to join right now.
Did you know that women live to an age of 81 today, compared to about 73 years old in 1970? And in general women today say they FEEL younger, too. We used to be told that women at age 65 were old, where today that number is part of a moving scale.
Though genetics plays a role, most of our feelings of vibrancy come from lifestyle. Eating right, sleeping enough, staying hydrated, ability to relax, and of course, regularly exercising are key.
Did you know that the Pilates technique is a form of exercise about 100 years old? In our Pilates room, we have state of the art Pilates Reformers, and TRX systems where we can guide you through this tried and true method. Because we know you want to continue feeling young as much as we do!
Good news! If you have a busy schedule, you tell US what time is good for you. Because all our pilates reformer and TRX classes are personal training with no more than 3 people in a class. So, OK, what's your next excuse?
The Pilates Method uniquely combines core strengthening in just the right body alignment so that you improve your flexibility at the same time. That means you are stretching out at the same time you are strengthening.
At our Mission Valley San Diego Pilates Studio, our pilates room is full of the latest state of the art Pilates equipment. While the person in this photo is strengthening her arms and upper back, she is also stretching her spine.
Bonus points: It feels so good!
One of our clients making a Pilates Reformer Class in Mission Valley look SOOO easy! This corestrength exercise is stretching out her spine and chest, as well as building strength in her shoulders and upper back. This will help her have improved posture. Plus it just feels good!

Weight bearing exercise helps in losing weight , burning calories, and building muscle. But it is also great for your bones.
The strength of your bones is measured as "bone mineral density" or BMD. Formation of bones during age 25-30 exceeds its deterioration. But after age 40 or so, this swings the opposite direction and we all (particularly women) need to assume a different strategy to stay healthy.
In recent studies it has been found that women who combine aerobic exercise and weight training had a greater BMD in their lumbar spine than women who did only aerobic exercise.
So it only makes senses that along with the Pilates Reformer Classes we have at our Mission Valley San Diego studio, we add TRX training to every client's time with us. This core workout combines not only exercise in weight bearing position, but it is a "suspended" weight bearing position which really gets results.
Come in for the "personalized best pilates workout" we are famous for....Maximum class size of 3 insures lots of attention. After all, you want to get strong and healthy, don't you?
Here at our #PilatesReformerStudioinMissionValley we are big advocates of stretching. Yes, we know how averse to #stretching some people are. Let's talk for a moment about stretching out your hip flexors. (Those are the muscles in the front of your hip which raise your legs when you are seated.) These get soooo overused when a person sits a lot.
Overused equals tight, and tightness in these muscles means a low back that hurts. In order to give our clients the #bestpilates every time, we follow the method of lengthening muscles at the same time as strengthening them.
This stretch can be performed standing on the floor in a forward leg lunge position. Tilt your pelvis forward while keeping your torso upright. Or better yet, do this on the Reformer or TRX. (we can show you how)
We include this stretch in every class we teach at Mission Valley Pilates. We think we owe it to our clients! (and their backs!)
Let me tell you about pushups....they are FABULOUS! Best exercise ever! They work not only the chest, back, and arms, but also your core! All the while training your body to be strong in all the right places for everyday activities. They help posture, and because they are weight bearing, they help strengthen bones.
At our San Diego pilates and fitness studio in Mission Valley, we include some of these with every Pilates Reformer class, adding up to the best pilates workout ever! We promise!
