Just in case you hadn't noticed, men and women are different! That becomes clear in the pilates room of our San Diego studio. Men in general are less flexible, have a thicker back, and are more bulky. They tend to be tight, especially through hips, spine, hamstrings, pecs, upper traps. They tend to have a forward head posture more than women.
Ta-DA! Enter Pilates! In each of our customized pilates reformer classes, we focus on all of this! Men constantly comment how stretched out they feel as a result of this coaching.
Knowing the male propensity for loving killer strength training, we also offer a portion of the class on our TRX equipment. Be warned tho, we choose the TRX exercises great for your corestrength, but also flexibility. Hmmm..can't be that bad, can it? Come on in, guys!
Our pilates room is stocked with the latest top of the line pilates equipment. Some people have never even heard of the Pilates Chair, pictured here. It is more challenging than the PIlates Reformer, and training with it really cranks things up!
We include exercises on it, in all of our Pilates Reformer classes in Mission Valley, for those clients who are experienced attendees at our San Diego studio.
Hot flashes and night sweats indicative of menopause can be eased with a diet rich in strawberries, pineapple, melon, and other fruits according to an Australian study. Try also the ingredients of a Mediterrranean diet like garlic, salads, pasta, and red wine.
And of course regular exercise figures into the equation as well!

If you have been on a Pilates Reformer, you are familiar with the work of Joseph Pilates done lying on the machine. The repertoire includes lying supine, prone, as well as some “all fours” work. But what about Pilates Reformer Standing Workouts? These can be an invaluable addition to your pilates class, due to their challenge of the smaller muscles necessary for balance. The series also recruits the muscles in the lumbopelvic area, and lower legs. Strength training lower body muscles will assist in stabilizing the low back, which in turn improves posture and upper body stability.
At Mission Valley Pilates & Fitness, Pilates Standing Workouts are included in each pilates class. Come see what a difference it can make!
Fascia is transparent, elastic tissue which lies between muscles and is actually embedded in them. One estimate is that 55% of muscle is actually fascial tissue. We all understand that parts of our body can tighten…fascia is no different. A type of deep stretching called fascial release has now made it into the mainstream of athletic training. An offshoot of rolfing, it can make a big difference in your flexibility when made part of a regular workout.

Here are some simple stretches that will relieve neck and shoulder stress if you don’t have time to get to Mission Valley Pilates & Fitness:
Stress not only causes emotional anguish, but it can also affect a person physically. We’re talking headaches, digestive issues, or, for many, unbearable pain in the neck and shoulders. When muscle tension builds up, it seems to create a barrier between the brain and the body, making it impossible to concentrate. Take a break for work and get some much-needed relief in minutes with these five quick stretches.
Here’s a video that shows how we make it personal at Mission Valley Pilates. The same Pilates Reformer exercise has been adapted for two different body types: one person who needs to protect her back to avoid surgery, and the other person with no injuries looking for a good challenging core workout. We can help both of these people at Mission Valley Pilates & Fitness, San Diego. Call us to find a class that suits your body’s needs!
Do you ever have the feeling that your body is “off center”? Has been for a while? Did you know that Pilates helps posture? The benefits of correcting bad posture include the following:
Reduced back and neck pain, easier breathing, less stress on all the body’s joints (spine, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles), relaxed shoulders, more comfort while walking or sitting, better sports performance, reduced risk of injury.
Wow! Pilates really does all that?? The answer is yes. Call Mission Valley Pilates & Fitness today to join our new 30 minute back and posture improvement class.
At Mission Valley Pilates & Fitness, we believe every workout should suit the goals and capabilities of each person in the class. Just because bicep curls used to feel good with 25 pound weights, doesn’t mean that 15 years later that’s the same way you should be doing them. Lots of changes occur with aging (we didn’t say getting old), and modifications should be made over time to avoid injury.
In our customized Pilates Reformer and TRX workouts, we keep in mind safe goals for flexibility, endurance, and strength training depending on the individual. Every exercise can be modified. Chronic conditions including arthritis, as well as injury recovery, are constantly catered to.
At Mission Valley Pilates & Fitness, you are always one of only 3-4 in a class. Come try a class, and see what it’s like to feel really special!
