If you are athletic, you are probably aware of your body's need for protein. It is necessary for rebuilding and preserving body tissue. But many people get too much of it. Did you know that eating more than 45% of your caloric intake as protein can trigger nausea, weakness, diarrhea, and for some, kidney stones and dehydration? It may also contribute to osteoporosis by leeching calcium from your bones.
The Institute of Medicine's recommendation is for 10% to 35% of total calories to be protein, and a high protein diet is considered to be 25% to 30% of overall intake.
Pay attention to how you feel, particularly when exercising....Feeling good is what it's all about!
