Knee problems usually reflect issues of leg alignment, flexibility, strength, and gait. The Reformer is a perfect instrument to help! In footwork done on the pilates equipment, it is possible to increase or decrease resistance as well as range of motion so that almost anyone can perform knee flexion and extension safely. Emphasis can be on quadriceps or hamstrings, or correct leg alignment at the hip, knee, and ankle. Single leg work allows emphasis on an injured leg or non-dominant leg. Basic pilates reformer movements such as foot in strap work, bridges on the bar, or side lying pushes will all assist this process. In the personal training approach of our reformer classes at Mission Valley Pilates and Fitness, we also add in fascial release work with balls or foam roller to loosen up the IT band, which is tight in so many people. This not only assists in knee rehabilitation but also back flexibility. You’ll feel the difference!
